Power surges aren’t something we usually worry about – at least not until the worst happens. Such as when your new TV or refrigerator suddenly stops working after a lightning strike.
Since that is not a desirable situation to be in, and since the weather these days is signified by a lot of thunder in the evening, now may be the perfect time to think about getting some surge protectors for your house.
Are you sure I need one?
You might be thinking at this point, “but we don’t usually hear about things like TVs being affected by lightning, maybe this is not something I need to worry about”.
An important fact that most people don’t know is that even if it doesn’t break your electrical equipment directly, it very often limits the lifetime of your devices. Therefore it makes a lot of sense to spend 2,000 rupees on a good surge protector to prolong the lifespan of your shiny new television that cost over 100,000 rupees.
Therefore a surge protector is not only an easy way to keep the electrician away, but also a a great way to extend the lifetime of your electrical equipment.
So what are surge protectors anyway?
Most surge protectors come in the form of what we call “power strips” or “extension cords”. Therefore if you’re planning to buy one of these anyway, always make sure that the one you’re getting has surge protection.
The grey one in the picture is made by a company called “Belkin” and can be found in supermarkets like Arpico. These come in many sizes such as 3 / 4 / 6 sockets. While these are a bit more expensive than your average power strip, I can guarantee from personally owning a few of these that these have stellar quality.
Some companies even offer power strips with voltage meters, but chances you’re not going to find that very useful anyway. Oh and while we’re on the subject, an important point to note when buying these is to make sure that there is enough spacing between the sockets to fit in two large plugs like laptop plugs, because the sockets are placed very close to each other in some of the cheaper ones.
Do I need one for every socket in my house?
No, you don’t. You would only need surge protectors for the more expensive electrical equipment in your house. For example, laptops and computers, refrigerators, televisions, wi-fi routers, washing machines, electric ovens etc.
Modern households are filled with fancy electrical gadgets so chances are that you would need one for every room. But rest assured, you don’t need to rush out and buy a surge protector for your bed-side lamp.
Whilst surge protectors can have a significant impact on the health of your electrical equipment, sometimes the worst happens, despite all our precautions. At times like these, when you really need an electrician, you know what to do!
