Five top tips to keep your washing machine in tip top condition

The washing machine is one of those things that we always take for granted. We never really pay much regard to it, it just sits there and does its job everyday. We never really appreciate its importance until it breaks down, and we’re stuck doing our laundry by hand.

Luckily washing machines are pretty predictable, so it’s easy to spot any issues before your washing machine completely breaks down. So here are some top tips to keep your washing machine in tip top shape!

Keep it level

This may seem obvious but it’s something that we often pay no attention to. Unless the washing machine is level, it can vibrate, rock, or “walk” across the floor during the spin cycle, which can damage the floor or the machine. If you’ve ever noticed your washing machine rocking about or moving when its operating, then this is probably the cause.

You might have noticed that you can actually rotate the feet of your machine. This is so that you can adjust the level of the machine yourself. This is actually really easy, you can turn the legs clockwise to lower it, and counterclockwise to raise it.

Wash it

Many people assume that since it’s literally called a ‘washing machine’ it has self-cleaning properties. This however, is not the case, and it’s a good idea to wash your washing machine regularly, by running an empty load with a mixture of vinegar and baking soda. This can help clean away the soap residue.

Also make sure you clean out the lint filter to keep your machine running efficiently.

Use the right detergent

A vast majority of Sri Lankan households still use regular detergent with washing machines. Not only can this have a detrimental effect on the lifetime of your washing machine, it could also result in unsatisfactory washing results. There are even separate types of washing machine detergent based on the type of your washing machine. For instance, in Sri Lanka, Surf excel has two separate types of washing machine detergent for top loading and side loading washing machines.

To ensure optimal performance always use the right type of detergent that matches your machine. In addition. Also try to make sure that you’re using the correct amount of detergent for the size of your load.

Replace the hoses

One of the most common points of breakdown for a washing machine is the horse. Check hoses regularly for bulging, cracking, fraying, and leaks around the ends. Replace the hose if a problem is found or every three to five years. You do not need an expert to do this, and it’s a very simple process.

Listen

Another common point of failure for washing machines is the motor, or its related components. This should come as no surprise, as its obviously subject to a lot of wear over the years. Be it a problem with your motor or the belt connecting it to the drum, this could often cause a lot of problems.

But luckily these problems come with a warning sign, or more precisely a warning sound. When there is something wrong with the motor, the machine would often make weird rattling noises, or start vibrating heavily.

IF you ever see this happen to your washing machine, you should call a technician to come take a look at it, as it would be much easier to fix it early on. QuickHelp has many experienced technicians available who can take a look at your washing machine and figure out what’s wrong.
