What do you do when your house let’s you down?

So you’ve had a hard day at work, but you finally make it home and you’re ready to catch up on some TV and chill. But then, BAM! the light goes out in your room. And it’s one of those fancy LED light fittings and you’ve got no idea how to replace it. What do you do when your lights let you down?

Different day. Same story. Tough day. You come home, looking forward to a nice relaxing shower. You turn on the tap. And it comes right off. And you’re left standing there soaking wet and staring in disbelief at the tap handle in your arm. What do you do when your plumbing lets you down?

Monday morning. You have to get the kids ready for school, and pack them lunch. You open your fridge. That’s funny, it used to light up when you opened it. And you’re pretty sure your vegetables aren’t supposed to be that color. Or that your fish is supposed to smell like that. What do you do when your fridge lets you down?

It sucks when things in your house let you down. But there’s nothing much you can do about it.

You just call a plumber, electrician and wait for him to arrive on time. Hope that he arrives on time. Pray that he arrives on time. But deep in your heart, you know he won’t.

When your tap, AC, fridge or lights has already let you down, isn’t it annoying when the guy you called to fix it also lets you down?

We’ve all encountered plumbers, electricians and other workers who always work on their own time. Who are often hours and sometimes even days late. Who always promise their five minutes away but never turn up. Who insist that they’re only free right at the time when you have to take your kids to school.

And then when he finally turns up, he has to go and get spare parts. Or he doesn’t know what he’s doing. He’s never worked on that type of fridge before. Fixing a simple tap can end up being a frustrating task when you don’t hire a ‘professional’.

So what should I do?

It’s always a good idea have a basic knowledge of what to do when something in your house breaks down. Even if you don’t know how to put in a new tap, everyone in your house should know how to turn off the main water supply if a tap breaks and you can’t stop the water from gushing out. Always have a plan as to what to do when something breaks.

For instance if your fridge is broken, it’s a good idea to ask your neighbors if you can temporarily store the most perishable items like meat in their fridge. And when your lights go out, always have an emergency lamp charged up that you can use as a temporary replacement.
