Make your fridge cool again!

Having problems with your fridge?

Oftentimes, this would mean that you need to get professional help, but it’s always a good idea to have a look and see if its something that you can fix yourself. In this post we will cover some of the most common faults found in your refrigerator and how you can fix them.

Your fridge is too warm

This is most commonly caused by a damaged air inlet damper. This is the part that controls how much cool air enters the compartment that you keep your food in. This part is fixed at the point where the cold air enters the fresh food compartment. Therefore any damage to this part could reduce the amount of cool air entering your fridge, resulting in higher temperatures than usual.

This part is usually housed in a regiform cover, and if you’re taking it apart, you need to take care not to damage this cover. It is recommended that you get a refrigerator technician to replace this part if you do not have a lot of experience tinkering with electronic equipment.

Your fridge is too noisy

This is another common complaint coming form many households. Generally the noise would be originating from the condenser motor. This motor is fixed to a fan that cools the condenser coils, which are located near the compressor which you can find at the bottom of the fridge.

You’ll need to remove the back panel to take a look at the condenser fan. Obviously, you should disconnect the power before you start tinkering around with your fridge. You can check if the motor is worn out or the blades are damaged. In such a case you would probably have to book a refrigerator technician to replace the motor. But if the problem is caused simply due to dirt or debris, you may be able to fix the issue by cleaning it, either manually or with a vacuum cleaner.

Another component that could be causing the noise is the evaporator fan motor, which is located near the freezer compartment. If the sound is coming from the freezer area, then it is quite possible that this is the cause. The instructions for repairing this are similar to the condenser motor.

Your fridge is leaking

Your plumbing is not the only thing that can leak!

Water leaks are a common problem associated with refrigerators, and are most commonly caused faulty door gaskets or seals. These are the strips of rubber like material that run across the length of the fridge door. These gaskets are usually fitted with magnets to ensure a tight seal when the fridge door is closed. If you can feel moisture along the edge of the fridge, then a faulty gasket or seal is probably the culprit.

Examine the lining of the door carefully to find any distortion or damage. You will need to replace any faulty gaskets you find.

Some fridges have a water inlet valve that connects to your home water supply. This is used to provide water to the ice maker (if your fridge has one). This is not very common in Sri Lanka, but if you do have an automatic ice maker, then the water inlet valve could potentially be the cause of a leaky fridge. If so, you would most likely have to replace the inlet valve to fix the issue.
