My washing machine doesn’t run!
Have you tried turning it off and on again? Aside from that age-old IT hack, if your washer doesn’t operate or make any noise, your power cord may lead to some clues. Make sure that the plug is actually plugged in and that the cord isn’t frayed or damaged.
Check any kill-switches or auto-off mechanisms and check the user manual to reset them
Beyond that, like a car that simply won’t start up, it comes to a point where seeing a technician to get your washing machine repaired is probably just the least stress-inducing way to go.
With a washing machine, the controls and switches may be faulty and any electrical work should be left to the professionals.
My washing machine is dirtier than my clothes!
Once a month you should run a cycle of hot water with 2 cups of chlorine bleach through your washer.
At the beginning of the wash cycle, add the bleach directly to the washtub and not through the bleach dispenser.
This routine maintenance will help remove any soap deposits and will also help keep germs from accumulating in the airtight parts of the washer. Some newer machines have a ‘clean’ cycle. Follow the manufacturers recommended instructions regarding this cycle.
My washing machine doesn’t wash my clothes properly!
This could be caused by user error due to piling in too many clothes, using the wrong type of detergent, not using enough water, or using the incorrect cycle. However, if you’re confident everything is perfectly fine in this regard, most of the potential issues may be sorted by taking a look at where the water is coming from:
- Check the supply valves and hoses: Check the valves are open fully, and that hoses are straight and not kinked
- Check drainage and cold water hoses. If your drain hose is clogged, there’s every chance the gross grey water is washing back into the drum. Similarly, the cold water hose should flow freely and be free of blockages. You can test this by disconnecting it and testing it in a bucket or sink
As usual, if it’s anything more than a blockage or an easy fix, it’s probably best to contact a washing machine technician.
My laundry room is flooded!
This is probably a washing machine leak. Once again, looking to your hoses and making sure they are working properly – and not backed up with dirt – can be a good indicator. Similarly, supply hoses can burst, and this means turning off the cycle immediately or using the shutoff valves.
Check how valves and hoses are fitted. If they’re worn or leaky, replace them.
It is good preventative maintenance to check the washing machine hoses from time to time for wear and/or weakness. As the hoses age, they lose resiliency and may develop small blisters which could burst.
A broken hose can cause a lot of damage to your home. Replace the hoses if there are any signs of wear. Most manufacturers recommend replacing the hoses every 5 years. For more peace of mind, one alternative is to use high quality stainless steel hoses.
